It’s taken a while but we’ve got there. We’ve finally discussed the man named by many as The God of Manga, Osamu Tezuka. Tony had to be prompted by the arrival of Tom Curry in his first, and hopefully not last, appearance on the podcast to discuss The Book of Human Insects.

Hear about the complexities of this female lead thriller created within the early seventies exercise in bleak adult-orientated manga named Tezuka’s ‘Dark Period’. This is a book that is in many ways of its time but also something that feels mature beyond the confines of the medium for mainstream Japanese culture in the early seventies. Tony and Tom discuss how themes of manipulation, abuse both sexually and physically and the dawning of a new age for Japan power their way through each page turn. From the same Mangaka that created Astro Boy and Kimba the Lion comes something psychologically multifarious that uses sex and power as a key to unlock an enthralling thriller, the hidden aspects of modern life and a possible aspect of Japan’s future.
