The Top and the Bottom for 07/02/2024

Morning,

It’s been an eventful week in comics. The usual arguments in empty rooms with a few little rays of sunshine from unexpected sources. I try to avoid the drama of the week but saw one of those YouTube guys who seems to live on screen talking about the joy of the form and the fans. It made me smile and reminded him, and consequently me, that there is a massive fan base out there for the American comic book format that we never hear from. Whilst so-called professionals argue and bicker these people buy, read, collect and enjoy comics.

I you’re not reading a comic today then you should be!

Over at Tribute Press we have an announcement coming this week, so keep watching over at the website for news on our hot new artistic signing, the legend that is Paul Sausage.

Personally, as what would be a blog post without added egomania, I’m on a comic reading rampage. I’ve treated myself to a few omnibus hardbacks and am back keeping a record of what I read and a little note on each one. Compared to last year numbers are up in volume and ‘pleasure’. Having read over 1k so far I can say that the most enjoyment is coming from the Image stable. More on that in coming weeks.

A big congratulations is due to Eamonn at the Mega City Book Club as he hit a massive 250 episodes! I was lucky enough to be a guest on that episode and we chatted in a French cafe about Angouleme’s brilliant comics festival. Pop over to the link here and have a listen. Eamonn is a great host with heaps of enthusiasm and knowledge and every episode is a must listen for me. Jump on it.

Talking of jumping in…

I follow a few Patreons online. Easily one of the best is ‘Dansmonsters’. Created by brilliant artist and storyteller Dan Charley it hosts podcasts, art, nostalgia, conversations about old movies with a grind house edge and much more. Sign up here.

As an earlier follower I received a massive box of goodies from Dan. I can’t promise that everyone will get this sort of swag but it is certainly evidence of the commitment he’s putting in along with an attention to his followers. I’ve already started on some GOR!!!!

He’s also posting almost daily art and recommendations. Trust me, if you are a fan of comics or horror or seventies and eighties trash horror then you need this in your life!

Final piece of news.

Over at the ACP we have a new sponsor. For those that listen regularly it won’t come as a surprise that we are now commercially in bed with Global Comix. Even us bitter and twisted old men of the comics podcast game have become super impressed with what they are doing. It also provides brilliant value for money. Take a gander.

Finally, on to the task at hand. A quick and easy one this week.

Tops.

I was just searching for something fun on a Sunday morning and came across this comic from Source Point Press. Three short mini series and loads of humour and adult action (not like that!)

The book unashamedly homages the John Wick dynamic and characters. But imagines instead if the master had died and not his (in this case anthropomorphic) dog. That dog then goes on a killing revenge spree. Don’t we all feel like that from time to time?

Trust me, you’ll dig this. Just plain fun and the art is really great. Here’s the link. With all the creator credits for you. They have T-Shirts!!!!

From the excellent. To the stuff that downright hurts my eyes.

Bottoms.

You know when a delivery driver hands you a little hand held pad to sign on. That’s how I imagined they did the cover to this comic.

Do what you want, noodle on a pad, show your friends. But don’t ask anyone to pay for this sort of crap.

It even looks like they forgot to letter some of the panels! The title of this rubbish is ‘Dragon King’ issue 1 by Noobs Son.

Avoid at all costs.

DING!

Many thanks for reading, see you next week.
