Tops and Bottoms 4/9/24

Welcome to the world of sunshine and showers.

Another busy week in comics. I’m feeling some FOMO as we have coming soon both Baltimore Comicon and SPX that I managed to get over to last year with buddies Sam, Cliff, Falpy and Strotty. And I finally got to meet and hang out with an indie comics hero Mr Steve Lafler. Not only did I grab and interview but he also came for dinner with the crew. Go find his work, you will not be disappointed.

This week over at the ACP we had our buddy Pete Doree on to chat about the trials of the solo comic creator. It all gets pretty deep again and we consider the whys and hows. One of my fav episodes. Have a listen here.

About half an hour ago I also booked the function room of a central London pub where we will be having a live 500th episode on 25/1/25. The Don will be running the charity raffle and everyone is welcome! Watch here for more announcements.

Small Press Book of the Week.

Edison Neo is 30 seconds from being the hot new artist! His work has fresh energy and he’s a dude who puts out great comics time and time again. We’ve been following his rise for a few years at the ACP and I can highly recommend his Patreon. More news coming about this artist very soon!

Tops.

Looking at what has been released this morning there were three books in competition for me. I’ve just read them and this came out on top.

I’m always surprised that more people aren’t talking about this series and its predecessors. Both Matt and Brennan are creating a brutal world that the Grendel Prime lands back onto. It doesn’t hold back in horror, gore and sexual content and also makes for a full read as each issue lands.

Bottoms.

I’m a Doctor Who fan. Mostly the classic series but I watch and often enjoy the newer versions. Alongside this habit I read the novels, listen to the audio and read the long-running Doctor Who Magazine.

It seems that long gone are the days of Mills, Wagner, Gibbons, McMahon, Lloyd and Co. This isn’t doing it for me! What is up with those faces!

A Close Second.

I’ve read some dashed off, half-arsed, unintelligible cack in my time but this really takes the carrot! Who thinks that this rubbish makes for either an engaging comic and/or value for money. Why not just ignore any previous character work and just write some BS of how you wish people would act in your ‘Reels’! At this point I suspect that they’ve done away with the role of editor at Marvel.

‘Shall I plate up the croissants?’

Not everything can be good.

Thanks for reading and catch up again soon.
