Tops and Bottoms 25/9/2024

Morning,

It’s been a windy weekend and I found myself up at ladder at 4am on Sunday morning fist fighting a length of guttering. Said heroics and rain that was shitting down halted the trip to the comic shop. But thanks to the wonders of the online world (look and you will find the odd one) I had access to plenty of comics to mention.

Meanwhile, over on the ACP this week I made the following statement and invited comment from ourselves and our guest:

Nobody else makes comics like me’.

It got us thinking. In broad and narrow terms. As a surprise to nobody people now/recently possess the hubris to say that they are the only person with that singular idea/style/approach. But, honestly, are they? ‘Hubris’ or ‘Honesty’ has always been the eternal question. What value is there to excessive pride or self-confidence? Many a Ted Talk will convince you that they are a required asset in ‘the sale’. Do not believe these bellends.

Is there any originality left? Sure, we see some in the margins. But it doesn’t seem to be something commonly searched out. Check out the recent vomit of X books for a life lesson in how to write teeth grindingly bad cliches. What is stopping a creator these days from breaking those social media and comics community/business same-think handcuffs and writing eloquently from his/her heart/head/gut/knuckles?

Nothing is stopping anyone. Despite the current comics bitterly sad status quo. Do not allow the internal whisper of deluded self regulation.

Small Press Chap of the Week.

I have a small pile of small press that I need to smell. But what I have so far read hasn’t made it into the ‘Worth Mentioning’ section. But there are many ways that you can read comics and one of them is Patreon. This is a dude myself and the ACP have been following for a number of years.

Edison Neo is going to be the next big name in comics. That is a nailed to the door fact. He’s coming up on the rails in the same area of comics art as Daniel Warren Johnson and James Harren but with a dash of Stan Sakai to make that sauce more interesting. His comics are a freaking rush! Get on this train before you are left at the station calling for your Mummy!

He has a super regular Patreon that I highly recommend subbing to. Click this right here!

Top.

Two this week. I can do what I want and after reading one, deciding my choice was all sorted another popped up for an entirely different reason.

Magic Order is the series that doesn’t get talked about enough. From a cast and continuity point of view it’s the best of the recent Dark Horse bunch from Mark Millar. This issue will maybe not be what you are expecting and ends on a twist. This is the fifth mini-series in the run and every batch has been a different breed of comic. This takes the team out of the way for a moment. Well worth a punt.

I was about to say that this series is back on track. Resident Alien from Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse has been a regular place to visit for me for years. But recently it’s become a little, dare I say, boring. This issue has the soap opera element we have come to enjoy and the sci-fi-wtf booster, as you can see from the cover. Themes of family, new life and death loom large. This really is one of the best ensemble casts in comics right now.

But then I noticed that this is issue four of four. Fucks sake. Everything that I love about this overall series seems to have happened in the last issue. That ends on a cliffhanger!

You truly cannot always get what you want! That’s the nature of comics I suppose.

The wait begins again.

Bottom.

I offer nothing in commentary except the art and the words/lettering.

Many thanks for reading!

The horror begins next month.
