Tops and Bottoms for 1/1/25

Dang!

Happy New Year!

How’d that happen. Suddenly we are in the science fiction year of twenny-twenny-five! So, let’s call it. This is the year we finally make contact. The world is still fighting. Everyone online is a bellend and the quiet and hardworking people of our planet are taking a step back to assess what actually needs saving. I know there are more important things but spare a thought for the comics industry. It could really do with a kick in the arse at the moment. Aliens, you quite possibly may be our last hope.

Elsewhere and when.

I’ve spent a lot, even for me, on comics this week. I had a couple of weeks of pull list to pick up at Gosh and also managed a trip to the Mega City Comics Sale. I snagged some gorgeous back issues including these copies of Unexpected. I also got some Stan Lee/Jack Kirby Fantastic Four in high grade. (Christmas treat!) This sale is running a little longer and well worth a visit.

We’ve just wrapped on our Favs of 2024 episode over at the ACP. The Seasonal Gooch has been a little boring and we used it to reflect on what really slapped our dicks this year. We also have a secret new section – listen to find out.

In Tribute Press News we have the five year ‘Transgressiveversary’ in March and have some saucy plans. I’ve just written another Atomic Hercules story and sent it to Falpy. (It includes a moment that may be a first in comics and that is not necessarily a good thing.) There are another couple of comics that we will be releasing at the same time and we are planning on running another Kickstarter. Keep ‘em peeled. I’ll be nagging you soon.

On with the task at hand. For those new to the weekly post – I try and show my favourite and least favourite of the weekly read. I stick to newly released comics. Somebody won’t like it.

Small Press Comic of the Week.

This really was a lovely and understated small press one-off comic. A man searches for identity and direction (literally and spiritually) in a featureless landscape. Sam is a valued member of the ACP community and surprised us with this one. And it’s great. He’s always worth following or on Instagram.

Tops.

Geiger issue 9 from Ghost Machine/Image Comics.

The brilliantly reliable Ghost Machine with Geoff Johns writing and Paul Pelletier stepping in on art duties this series continues to stun. We’ve talked up The Machine a lot recently and they deserve every medal. Consistently well made and pulpy adventure stories that show the rest of the industry how they should be doing this dance.

There are a load of spoilers and new threads in the last few pages of this issue. Including the appearance of some Old, New and Navy Blue.

And inevitably. From the ‘Tops’ we reach the…

Bottoms.

A couple of candidates this week.

Pretty generic cover right? Little hidden story beat at the bottom of the image? Inside DC have taken the counterintuitive decision to feature nothing interesting on page 1. I feel like DC are just fiddling with themselves while they wait for a train to run themselves over.

What the fuck is that even supposed to be? (Other than someone tracing over a photograph).

Next up, as it’s still technically Christmas, I thought I would throw in some Rob.

This is clearly the promotion of a New Year dance move. Elbows bent, fists pointing down – just like your three friends! (For those interested this can be found in Deadpool Team-Up issue 2).

Many thanks for reading.
