Tops and Bottoms – 18th March 2025.

Hey! Thanks for coming back.

Over at the ACP we had a Three Amigos episode. With all the great and interesting guests we have had on in the last year it is just great to sit down and chat to the boys. It tends to go off the rails (normally my fault). This week we chatted about Reading Habits and how, in these days of cliques and fractured social media, we get news of our new comics out in to the world. Just a few anecdotal insights as we don’t know it all. As always we are interested in hearing your thoughts. We also reviewed and recommended a load of small press and indie books.

Art by Cliff Cumber from Tony Osmond s a Movie Star issue 2.

Can I also take a second to promote the Tribute Press Kickstarter that has around twelve days left to run. This time round we are offering three underground comics and one book of terrible Gen X advice. There are a load of original art tiers and as we are well over the line I can confirm that it won’t be long before the books will be in your hands. Have a click here. Not for the faint of heart. Feargal Sharkey might not like them…

So. For those new here. Every week I pick a few comics out of my read pile and say what is the best (‘Tops’) and what is the worst (‘Bottoms’) of my reading week.

Small Press Comic of the week.

Leslie Wenlock art.

I won this in a competition. Genuinely. Although I am on record for being a fan of the crazy that Leslie Wenlock and his chums at Black Ink Comix are spreading. This is the story of a woman making it home and reliving the fun/shame/gossip/booze of the previous night. With all the cluttered and honest thoughts of a real person. Black and white and dirty. Highly recommended.

Tops.

This is a Marvel series (more from them shortly) that really crept in unnoticed by the comics fraternity. It struck me whilst I was reading issue 3 that this could easily be described as the House of Ideas does a World War 2 version of the B.P.R.D. Some cool ideas from Phillip Kennedy Johnson and some of the best art at the company at the moment from Adam Gorham. Well worth seeking out.

Bottoms.

Back up stories have never had the best reputation. Some good ones for sure but when they are used to stuff an anniversary issue and inflate the price they will often get on my nerves. Someone in Editorial at Marvel is desperate to make She-Hulk a big star but the books keep getting cancelled and have not been any good. So here they have found some rushed off story and art and bundled it in with an otherwise excellent bit of comics from the main Hulk headline team. I feel like I have had my pocket picked! Again.

More soon.

Thanks for reading.
