Tops and Bottoms – 13th August 2025.

Hey!

Big ‘Hello’ to all the recent subscribers on the Substack. You can join the small chorus of people being annoyed when they see me pop up again in their emails.

“Not this twat again!”

Yes! Again!

Don’t worry, it’s a shorter one this week. I had a long rant written on the incoming wave of censorship we are seeing but think I’ll save it for another time. (Yes, I censored myself!)

Alan Moore & David Lloyd’s V for Vendetta.

I’m back from the Wall of Corn. Back at work, with a fan pointed inches away from my face. I did fit in a trip to the London Comic Mart and breakfast with my buddy Eamonn Clarke on Sunday. His podcast The Mega City Book Club is a big favourite of mine. He’s even allowed me on a few times. This week is all about ‘When the Wind Blows’ by Raymond Briggs. Eamonn and his guest, Jim O’Brien, really got me remembering that chilling warning! (We also managed to pick up a load of dirty paper at the Mart!)

Over at the Awesome Comics Podcast we had Hugh Newell on, all the way from Portland, Oregon to talk about his series ‘Lizzie Parsec’. We get in to the down bellows of Science Fiction and some great chats about craft and motivation. Not to be missed. We also do the usual amount of ill-judged humour and the making of broad declarations!

Small Press Comic of the Week.

An anthology of black and white comics by men of my age and older who totally understand the assignment. Great ideas, themes and bad but good gags bash up against each other. All in a large formatted softcover! Take that Manga! You can grab a copy right here.

Tops.

This short but grimly-cool mini comes to an end. Part homage and part end of days this is a clear highlight in the Marvel monthly releases. Yes, I got two different covers – but mostly because I accidentally ordered it twice at the FP site. (Possibly). I’ll likely double-dip on the inevitable hardcover, and so should you! Never shake this addiction!

Bottoms.

Yes, I know this is an online comic only. But this is also a Marvel Comics cover! WTF happened to his face? And what did the artist do with the other 55 minutes of the hour it took him to draw this? There are so many great artists out there looking for work and this is what you go with? What has happened to the X-Men?

Never forget to debate in the market square. Especially about the medium of comics.

Many thanks for reading!
