Tops and Bottoms – 20th Jan 2026.

Morning,

‘You can’t manage to have a really good morning and a really good evening.’ – Steve Coogan.

Once more around the hump we dance!

A proper Avengers anniversary cover!

In comics I’m close to dropping so many stories. Friends for decades. Constants. But changes have come. Some good, most bad. They give me a dull ache – the bad ones. But the good ones inject joy. Keep reading and you’ll see.

That’s the forever confusion of the collector. When to stop, when to change. The warning of the reboot Toot Toot! But I fail to never look back. Wondering what I’ll/I’ve missed.

What is likely is just repetition and a climb down a ladder of dwindling originality. What is possible is the return to past glories, a rerun of form, a lightness of being. A decent and consistent series.

Unusual, unlikely but possible.

Us lifers live partly in hope but often in cynicism.

“It’s all just a bit of history repeating!” – Dame Shirley Bassey.

So…what have I been reading?

Fantagraphics Book of the Week..

A cheat of my own weekly rules. And a preview copy. Two black and white stories about the lies people tell themselves and each other. Some of Steve Lafler’s best work. Clever and engaging in story with art that’s full of character but eminently readable.

Tops.

There’s that joy. Great adventure storytelling.

Bottoms.

From a lifeless cover (a double-issue wraparound with dead-eyed action figures) to a main story that is unengaging and just darn confusing (not to mention severely lacking in any sequential awareness). Not even the lauded team of Bendis and Bagley on a back-up can save this crap. A MASSIVE disappointment.

Not everything can be perfect.

See you in a week. Thanks for reading. I promise to be more upbeat next time.
