Tops and Bottoms of the Pile 3/4/24

Morning,

It has been a bad few days in comics. I have no intention of getting into the details. That is not for me to do. But what I can say is that level heads need to prevail and that something needs to change. As with many men of my extended age my thoughts are split between the Cynic and the Dreamer. I can hope for something to change but I think there is a good chance it won’t. But if nobody tries then what are we left with? That vicious cycle might just come round again?

In 2022 there were 5.6k suicides registered in England and Wales. 74% of them were men. That’s not to deny the women also taking that terrible step too. But some men feel it hard to reach out and ask for help, and they shouldn’t. I have lost two friends this way in the last year. Strong, funny, hardworking friends. None of us saw it coming. If you are suffering alone then please reach out. I can’t recommend the Mental Health Charity MIND more. A great group of people who are there to help. Find them right here.

You can also call them and get help on 0300 1233393.

If I have any advice. I’d say that now is the time to come off so-called Social Media. Actually talk to people. Don’t be part of a gossip cycle. There’s often nothing better than sitting across a table from people talking, laughing, debating and even arguing. Give it a try.

OK. Let’s talk comics.

So, what have I been reading? In the UK we are just out the other side of the Easter weekend. A time where I cut into that never-ending read pile and also managed to catch up on the newer releases. Some good and some bad.

Top.

This title continues to rock along. It is a fresh, soapy and less complicated alternative to the main Marvel Spidey titles. It gives you a taste of that old recognisable character and adds all the new status quo in to the mix. I think the most important element here is that it is just extremely well written, with great art and a lot of fun! It feels like a genuine slice of Marvel style. Highly recommended.

Bottom.

This is the last issue of another attempt (in the same 12 months) to try and get an Iceman comic up and running. It was also dull and half-arsed. Just look at those two interior pages! They do know that there’s a paper shortage right?

Oh Marvel. Sometimes I really wonder what you are thinking!

See you next week.

Many thanks for reading.
